Mais Oui by Bourjois: launched in 1939. Created by perfumer Constantin Mikhailovich “Kot” Weriguine.<br />
<br />
Mais Oui, pronounced MA-WEE, which means “certainly," or “but yes!" in French.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
It was available in parfum, eau parfumee (eau de cologne/toilet water), solid cologne stick, dusting powder, rouge, lipstick and face powder.<br />
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
<u>Fragrance Composition:</u></h3>
<br />
So what does it smell like? It was classified as a floral aldehydic perfume, similar to Chanel no. 5 but heavier and woodier. It made use of Synarome's Animalis base.<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Top notes: aldehydes, fruity notes of peach and plum</li>
<li>Middle notes: clover, jasmine, rose, hyacinth, lily of the valley, narcissus</li>
<li>Base notes: musk, birch tar, Mysore sandalwood, leather, civet, ambergris, castoreum, costus, tonka</li>
</ul>
<br />I recently received a small sample of the perfume from my friend Sharon. It was a few drops from a 1/2 oz bottle of parfum. Here is my impression:</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on">While the perfume has significantly degraded over time, the first note that hit me was civet, very, very urinous civet and the dirty hair scent of costus. This was quickly followed by narcissus, hyacinth, lily of the valley, jasmine, rose. I did detect a trace of sandalwood, tonka bean and hint of stone fruit. The civet note was constant throughout. I did sneeze a few times from the presence of aldehydes. I know that Mais Oui used Synarome's fabulous Animalis base which accounts for the strong civet and costus odor. Synarome's Animalis fixative is a blend of natural musk, civet, costus and castoreum, it is described as an animalic, musky, sensuous odor with costus-like connotation. Can be described as unwashed human hair, goat smell and dirty socks.</div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on">I always like to conjure up an image to go along with the perfume, please don't be offended:</div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on">It's the end of a very successful evening on the first day of May in an upper crust Parisian bordello. A tired courtesan finally closes her door after the last customer walks out. She walks over to her bedside table and picks up the fresh posy he left her as a parting gift, a simple lily of the valley sprig to ensure good luck and prosperity for the upcoming season. She puts the posy back down on the table and contemplates over whether to eat the peach or the plum in the fruit basket on the table. She chooses the juicy plum and then sinks down into her bed, its woolen blankets lying rumpled in a heap at the foot. She lays back with her head with its dirty, mussed hair resting against the pillow, in one hand she wraps a silken curl around her finger, amazed she can still smell a trace of the rosewater she rinsed it in from the morning. Her body, exhausted and slightly sweaty, cools off with the breeze from an opened window. The scent of night blooming jasmine wafts up from a neighboring garden. She closes her eyes and can still see the ruggedly handsome visage of her latest customer, she even smells the animal musk of him, the way his leather boots smelled like birch tar. Funny, she still smells the scents of her customers from earlier in the evening, a sultry mix of soft tonka bean, creamy sandalwood, castoreum and ambergris. Her own perfume was a gift from another gent, a precious bottle containing the essences of narcissus, hyacinth, and clover. But the spell is broken as she smells something else too, a used chamber pot tucked discreetly under the bed. </div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

<u>Bottles:</u></h3>
The perfume was originally housed in a frosted glass flacon by Verreries Brosse. Around 1947, a clear, unfrosted version of this bottle was introduced. The purse flacon was made up of clear glass and was topped off with a blue plastic screw cap adorned with a tassel. the mini perfume was a replica of the standard size parfum bottle but instead of a glass stopper, it was made up of a fan shaped blue plastic.<br />

<u>Fate of the Fragrance:</u></h3>
<br />
Mais Oui was still being sold in 1950. I am unsure when it was discontinued. The bottles can be found from time to time, but they are usually empty.<br />

Kobako was launched by Bourjois in 1936. Kobako is a chypre floral fragrance for women. Created by Ernest Beaux, who was assisted by Constantin Mikhailovich “Kot” Weriguine.<br />
<br />The name Kobako, refers to a lacquer or porcelain box containing incense, Kobako means "perfume-box" in Japanese.<br />

It is said that she had an almost superstitious belief in its power to stir the emotions. Today, Kobako Perfume, so subtle, so seemingly remote, yet so persuasive to the senses, is the exquisite, the thrilling gift for a charming American lady. In a bottle of Chinese design. <b><u>Advertisements:</u></b></h3>
<b><br /></b> A 1936 newspaper advertisement reads:<br />
<div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>"Kobako - Chinese for perfume container. Kobako - new and exciting perfume of Oriental allure - a modern version of the glory of 12th century China. Mysterious, fascinating and whispering to her of thrilling adventure. Matching the artistry of France with the subtle of an exotic Chinese vase. Kobako is entrancing."</i></blockquote>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>Reste Jeune, 1936:</div><div><i></i><blockquote><i>"Kobako, from Bourjois, has just appeared; we can wish him the success of his elders. This is the type of excellent perfume that most women like and are accessible to them (advantage to consider). Its presentation, in a Chinese case in engraved red lacquer, is most attractive."</i></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>Vogue, 1936:</div><div><i><blockquote>"Kobako de Bourjois, amiable, nuanced like a polite Chinese phrase, fresh with warmth, persuasive."</blockquote></i></div><div><br /></div><div>
Marie-Claire, 1937:</div>
<div>
<i><blockquote>"Kobako by Bourjois: Heady. Dominant note: rare wood species, jasmine. Holds up better in fabrics and furs. For brunettes of an exotic type."</blockquote><br /></i> <i><br /></i> <br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
<b><u>Bottles:</u></b></h3>
<br />
<b><br /></b> The bottle for Kobako is a replica of antique Chinese snuff bottle, and was manufactured by Verreries Brosse in France. This bottle was not designed or manufactured by Lalique, as I sometimes see this erroneously attributed. The red and black Bakelite presentation case was meant to imitate aged and carved cinnabar, I believe that Eduard Fornells made the case. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<div>
Drug and Cosmetic Industry, 1936:</div>
<div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>"With the Chinese influence strong in makeup and fashions, Bourjois is introducing a new Oriental fragrance in a typically Chinese container. Kobako," is the name of the new perfume, which we are told is translated to mean "beautiful perfume container" in Chinese. The bottle is of frosted glass, and said to be a copy of an ancient Chinese perfume bottle. It is encased in Oriental red embossed plastic box, which is a copy of a Chinese lacquered cabinet with a black base."</i></blockquote>
<div>
<br />
Arts and Decoration, 1937:</div>
<div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>"Bourjois' newest perfume, "Kobako," in a jewel- like flacon copied from an ancient Chinese perfume bottle. Even the container is inspired by an old lacquered cabinet, also Chinese. The base is deep black and the cover is a dramatic glowing red."</i></blockquote>
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A miniature version was also produced, this can be very hard to find. This bottle is rectangular in shape with curved shoulders, the bottle is molded with the floral design that matches the one on the luxury size bottle. A red screw cap tops the bottle. The presentation box used for the mini bottle is red cardboard and embossed with floral designs reminiscent of the Bakelite box's design.</div>

<b><u>Fate of the Fragrance:</u></b></h3>
<br />
The last advertisement for Kobako I have found is dated 1951, so I assume the fragrance was discontinued around that time. It was discontinued for many years before being reformulated by François Demachy and relaunched in 1985.<br />
<br />
So what does it smell like? It is classified as a green floral fragrance for women.<br />

Manon Lescaut is an opera in four acts by Giacomo Puccini. The story is based on the 1731 novel L’histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut by the Abbé Prévost.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
The libretto is in Italian. It was somehow cobbled together by five librettists whom Puccini employed (or went through): Ruggero Leoncavallo, Marco Praga, Giuseppe Giacosa, Domenico Oliva and Luigi Illica. The publisher, Giulio Ricordi, and the composer himself also contributed to the libretto. So confused was the authorship of the libretto that no one was credited on the title page of the original score.<br />
<br />
Puccini took some musical elements in Manon Lescaut from earlier works he had written. For example, the madrigal Sulla vetta tu del monte from Act II echoes the Agnus Dei from his 1880 Messa a quattro voci. Other elements of Manon Lescaut come from his compositions for strings: the quartet Crisantemi (January 1890), three Menuets (probably 1884)[1] and a Scherzo (1883?). The love theme comes from the aria Mentia l'avviso (1883).<br />

<br />
Bourjois used this beautiful name for their powder, Manon Lescaut starting in 1907. The powder was still being sold in 1946.<br />
<br />
<br />
From advertisements in the 1908 Sears & Roebuck catalog:<br />
<br />

<div dir="ltr" trbidi="on">
Sold in department stores and drug stores for over thirty years, Evening in Paris was given to many a mother, a sweetheart or a friend as a special gift to win her heart with its enticing scent.<br />
<br />
Evening in Paris by Bourjois: created by Ernest Beaux, assisted by Constantin Mikhailovich “Kot” Weriguine, was launched in 1928 in France under the name Soir de Paris and was an instant hit. The name evoked the reputation of gaiety, romance and love of the French capital. It was then named Evening in Paris and 1929 for sale in the United States.<br />

<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Top notes: aldehydes, orange blossom, violet, bergamot, estragon, cyclamen</li>
<li>Heart notes: ylang ylang, linden blossom, clover, lilac, rose de mai, jasmine, lily of the valley, orris, carnation, wallflower</li>
<li>Base notes: vanilla, Mysore sandalwood, myrrh, vetiver, styrax, amber, incense, musk, benzoin, heliotrope</li>
</ul><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /></div><div>Marie-Claire, 1937:</div><div><blockquote><i>"Soir de Paris by Bourjois: dry, penetrating. Dominant note: jasmine, oak moss. Excellent on the skin. For blondes and chestnuts. In the environment where she evolves, she is 'the beautiful Madame Une Telle'."</i></blockquote></div>

The scent became Bourjois' most successful fragrance. By the 1950s, it was touted as "the fragrance more women wear than any other in the world," yet by 1969 it had disappeared from shelves.<br />
<br />
The fragrance was available in parfum, eau de toilette and eau de cologne. You may also find dusting powder boxes, talc bottles, sachet bottles, soap, lipstick, bath cubes, hand lotion, perfumed bath oil, rouge, cologne sticks, compacts and face powder.</div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on">
<br />
Evening in Paris was attractively packaged in gift boxes, some in the shape of stars, sailor's hat or a crescent moon. These special gift sets were often for sale around Christmas, Mother's Day and Easter.</div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on"><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;"><u>Beetleware Cases and Presentations:</u></h3><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on">It is possible to find the various novelties for the perfume made up of "Beetleware." You might come across the lucky horseshoe, clam shell, turtle, hotel door, grand piano, shoe, egg, grandfather clock, champagne bucket, owl or very rarely the Eiffel Tower & Marble Arch presentations. The Marble Arch presentation was created for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. </div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on">Beetleware was an early type of plastic formed from a urea formaldehyde powder developed in England by Streetly Manufacturing Co. and licensed to American Cyanamid, who introduced it into the US in 1929. These cases are erroneously touted as being made of "Bakelite,"but this is not the case. The chemical name for plastics like Beetleware is urea formaldehyde, and they differ from the phenol formaldehyde resin plastics such as Bakelite in that the raw material is an absolutely clear, colorless substance. Beetleware can be made in a variety of vivid colors such as red, white, green, blue, and these colors, unlike those of Bakelite, hold up even today without significant change to hue other than fading due to sunlight exposure. I have found the clamshells in pink, white, blue, green and red beetleware.</div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on">Lucky for us, these novelties were molded with their english registry numbers so we can pinpoint their date of manufacture: </div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on"><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Grand Piano has registry number: 824784 for 1937.</li><li>Clamshell has registry number: 810099 corresponding to 1936.</li><li>Turtle has registry number: 818385 corresponding to 1937.</li><li>Owl has registry number: 825003 corresponding to 1938.</li><li>Hotel Door has registry number: 832419 corresponding to 1939.</li><li>Toby jug has registry number: 834875 corresponding to 1939.</li><li>Grandfather Clock has registry number: 837401 corresponding to 1940.</li><li>Eiffel Tower has registry number: 859996 for 1949.</li><li>Slipper has registry number: 866164 corresponding to 1952.</li></ul></div><div dir="ltr" trbidi="on">
<br />
During the 1940s, there were wartime presentations and all packaging bore the following statement: "This is a temporary Victory package. The contents are unchanged."<br />

<u>The Fate of the Fragrance:</u></h3>
<br />
Bourjois was bought out by the Wertheimer family who then purchased the Chanel group. Chanel now owns Bourjois and Evening in Paris was reformulated in 1992 by Chanel's leading perfumers. <br />
So what does the reformulation smell like? It is classified as a soft, sweet floral fragrance for women.<br />
